Dallas Contemporary exhibiting artist, Pia Camil, has made a series of limited edition t-shirts in collaboration with designer Lorena Vega exclusively for TenOverSix. The shirts were originally produced in Latin America, sold to retailers and organizations in the United States, and then illicitly found their way to the bargain markets of Mexico. Camil hand selected a range of these shirts, which she has then altered with a screen print that maps the genealogy of the shirt—originating in Latin America and subsequently traveling to the United States, Mexico City, and finally arriving in Texas. The project brings attention to contemporary trade routes and the permeability of borders.
This shirt relates directly to the exhibition Bara, Bara, Bara at Dallas Contemporary in which similar shirts have been transformed into sheets of brightly colored fabrics, punctuated by the neck openings of various shirts. They are installed as awnings hanging throughout Dallas Contemporary’s galleries, reminiscent of those at the market where the shirts were sourced.
